Climb Smarter Not Harder
Maintaining the stoke on a big day linking 5 summits on The Liberty Traverse.
The most fulfilled climbers take a holistic approach to training.
Climbing is undeniably a complex sport. Every route is a unique combination of movements, with multiple solutions to success. Falling is an innate human fear as we don’t have wings to fly. Our bodies undergo novel stressors and that can create injury or imbalance. Climbing is an infinite game - there’s always more to learn. With all this in mind, training for climbing cannot simply be a race to push numbers or get stronger tendons. For best results we have to include how we climb by addressing mindset and relationship with this beautiful sport.
The most fulfilled climbers are those who figured out how climbing fits into their life – not how they fit into climbing. They may climb well, but they aren’t defined by their ability. While others get mentally bogged down or exacerbated by a challenge, these climbers are able to use everything as a learning experience. They’re able to do their best and let go of all the extraneous noise that gets in the way of progress.
I’m both interested in getting you to your next V# as well as your overall performance, health, and longevity in climbing.
Instead of narrowly defining success as getting to the top, we’ll examine such questions like: How are you approaching your projects? What fears are holding you back? What is your relationship with failure and success? What mobility or strength imbalances could be addressed to unlock your potential?
Through our work we can:
Refine your climbing technique
Improve your ability to find optimal movement solutions for you, not the other climber on the wall
Overcome fears and anxieties about falling, performance, and failure
Create a flexible and durable mindset for a life-long relationship with climbing
Cultivate laser-like focus on the wall
Uncover blindspots holding you back
Deepen your embodied awareness
Our coaching sessions might involve accessory fitness (think injury prevention, core strength, addressing specific weaknesses), deconstructing + strategizing your latest project, breathwork, falling practice, visualization, and more.
I include optional homework assignments so you can integrate your learning between sessions.
As your climbing intelligence increases, the V#’s and 5.#’s will come.
A little about me and my background:
As I approach my 16th year of climbing, I’ve been fortunate to have climbed in a wide variety of locations across multiple disciplines – trad, sport, bouldering, and aid big wall (in peak condition climbing 5.12c, 5.12c, V7 and 5.9 C2 respectively). My all-time favorite route is Astroman on Washington Column. Professionally, I have previously served the climbing community as an instructor, curriculum designer, and gym manager.
I love movement practices, and am informed by many including windsurfing, calisthenics, partner dance, martial arts (wing chun, capoeira), endurance sport, and more. My principle discipline now is hatha yoga and workouts designed by Paragon Athletics.
